"If a colleague were to ask me, "What would you recommend I read ifI want to become a real expert on bipolarity?" I would respondBipolar Psychopharmacotherapy: Caring for thePatient."
Journal of Bipolar Disorders
And the second edition is even better! BipolarPsychopharmacotherapy covers both pharmacotherapy and thesupportive role of psychotherapy, psychoeducation and socialapproaches to provide a broad integrative philosophy of care forbipolar patients. Extensive coverage is given to special managementissues such as the pharmacological care of women with bipolardisorder, children and the elderly, as well as bipolar depressionand suicide prevention.
The mood swings that characterize bipolar disorder can now bebetter stabilized in most patients than in the past, but theillness must be carefully managed throughout a person's life.Pharmacotherapy is central to the acute treatment and long-termmanagement and as there are several classes of drugs which areoften prescribed concurrently, treatment issues are complex. Thisessential reference work features critical reviews of the existingliterature, plus information on new treatments that have beenreported at peer reviewed scientific meetings, often written by thepioneering experts on a particular treatment. The second-generationantipsychotics are now covered in separate chapters to providein-depth coverage of these agents. There are also new chapters onthe pharmacological treatments of mixed states and rapid cyclingand novel therapeutic vistas.
