Varactors are passive semiconductor devices used in electroniccircuits, as a voltage-controlled way of storing energy in order toboost the amount of electric charge produced. In the past, the useof low-cost fabrication processes such as complementary metal oxidesemiconductor (CMOS) and silicon germanium (SiGe) were kept forintegrated circuits working in frequency ranges below the GHz. Now,the increased working frequency of radio frequency integratedcircuits (RF ICs) for communication devices, and the trend ofsystem-on-chip technology, has pushed the requirements of varactorsto the limit. As the frequency of RF applications continues torise, it is essential that passive devices such as varactors are ofoptimum quality, making this a critical design issue.
Initially describing the physical phenomena that occur inpassive devices within standard IC fabrication processes, Designand Characterization of Integrated Varactors for RFApplications goes on to:
* present information on the design of wide band electricalvaractor models (up to 5 GHz) which enable the accurate predictionof device performance;
* propose a specific methodology for the measurement ofintegrated varactors, covering on-wafer measurement structures, thecalibration process, and detailed descriptions of the requiredequipment;
* explain de-embedding techniques and also analyse confidencelevel and uncertainty linked to the test set-up;
* examine the design of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO)circuit as a practical example of the employment of methodsdiscussed in the book.
Providing the reader with the necessary technical knowledge fordealing with challenging VCO designs, this book is an essentialguide for practising RF and microwave engineers working on thedesign of electronic devices for integrated circuits. It is also auseful reference for postgraduate students and researchersinterested in electronic design for RF applications.

Íñigo Gutiérrez is currently a Lecturer in theEngineering Faculty of the University of Navarra (TECNUN), Spain.From 2002, he has held the post of Assistant Director of the RFArea of TECNUN and his research interests include integratedpassive filters using varactors and integrated transformers for RFapplications. Whilst at the University, Dr Gutiérrez hasparticipated in several research projects involving varactors forindustry and the Basque Government. He has also authored 4technical publications and made 8 contributions to internationalcongresses.

Juan Meléndez is Assistant to the Director of theCommunications Area of the Centro de Estudios e InvestigacionesTécnicas de Guipúzcoa (CEIT), at the University ofNavarra. He is also Assistant Professor in the Laboratory ofComponents and Elecromagnetic Compatibility at TECNUN. Sincejoining the CEIT, he has been Leader on a number of projects forinternational companies, developing wireless systems for domesticapplications and implementing Six-Sigma methodology for thedevelopment and characterization of Wireless LAN applications inSiGe and CMOS. His research interests include system design levelof RF transceivers. He is a member of the IEEE and has authoredfour technical publications.

Erik Hernández is currently a Researcher in theCommunications Area of the Centro de Estudios e InvestigacionesTécnicas de Guipúzcoa (CEIT), at the University ofNavarra. He is also Assistant Professor in the Laboratory ofComponents TECNUN. Since joining the CEIT, he has been Leader forthe project 'Passive Radiofrequency Link for ISM Bands'and has worked on different research initiatives for the companyIKUSI. He has authored seven technical publications and has made 10contributions to international congresses.
