The EnviroInfo community has a surprising long history. Nevertheless, the community is still in development. We want to point out three aspects of this formation. In doing so, we regard EnviroInfo not only as a conference series or well-defined research field but more as a scientific community:
- The impact of computers and computer science in the society is still growing. We discuss new mega trends like ambient computing and reason about sustainability in the information society. Since several years it is obvious that computers cannot be regard as neutral tools in sciences and society. With designing computer systems we design the development of the society. Computers play more and more an active part in this process.
- Regarding the research field and research perspectives, the EnviroInfo community is unique. Corresponding communities in the USA or in Asia do not exist. However, the EnviroInfo community is growing also on the international level, including step by step researchers from different European countries and other continents. With a proposal in the EU FP7 programme, the EnviroInfo community started successful a support action for the unit “ICT for Sustainable growth” in DG INFSO. Within the project ICT-ENSURE “European ICT Environmental Sustainability Research” the EnviroInfo network can be enlarged and weaved in the European Research Area.
- The developments implicate that the EnviroInfo covers more and more problem areas and research fields. All challenges in the relationship of information technology, environmental protection and sustainable development are potential research fields, more or less independent of paradigms and images. From there, the EnviroInfo community is very heterogeneous. The benefit is that Enviro- Info is an open community, importantly regarding the evolution to a European scientific community. However, it is a problem too, in particular in a sociological perspective.
