Joseph Attah Ashun was born in Elmina, Gold Coast (present Ghana) in 1943. After his primary school education at the Elmina Methodist School, he attended the Ghana National College, Cape Coast, from 1956 to 1963, where he obtained the University of Cambridge School Certificate (8 ‘O’ Levels) in 1960 and the General Certificate of Education (3 ‘A’ Levels), University of London, in 1963. He was the first student to receive the Sixth-form honours. In 1971, he obtained his MD degree from the University of Zagreb, Croatia, before proceeding to West Germany, where he was appointed as junior doctor at the clinic and polyclinic of the University Medical Centre of Justus-Liebig-University Giessen. He completed his post-graduate studies in surgery at the St. Vincenz Teaching Hospital in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, in 1981. At St. Vincenz Hospital he was one of the first emergency doctors to be recruited into the city’s medical emergency programme. From 1983 to 1984, he worked as senior medical officer in surgery at St. Dominic’s Hospital at Akwatia, Ghana, before returning with his German wife and child to Germany. In 1985 he was appointed in civil service as head of prison health service in Essen, where he also acted as medical adviser during court proceedings. He eventually became a consultant in this field of medicine. He is also a member of the German Medical Association.
