This little tale of happenings during what once was an eagerly-anticipated event in the lives of East Londoners, began as a writing group exercise. My good friend Bill Sibley paid me the compliment of not only looking forward to each episode, but laughing out loud when he heard it. Being Londoners of an equitable age, we are both familiar with the ups and downs of the old hop fields. This book, then, is in thanks to him for faultless companionship and good company. Long may it continue.
