Solid Wastes Management begins with a focus on processing municipaland similar commercial, as well as industrial wastes; assessing andminimising the environmental impacts of processing and disposal. The second section reviews the treatment technologies available(physical, biological and thermal), their advantages, disadvantagesand environmental performance. The third section considersthe environmental and health impacts of the technologies andreviews the use of models to predict landfill leachate, gasformation and pollution dispersion. The fourth section is on thehuman health impact of waste management and draws on the previoussections, bringing in pollutants such as bioaerosols and ultra-fineparticulate material. In the fifth and sixth sections, theimportance of adopting an integrated approach to waste managementis demonstrated through consideration of life cycle assessment andits use to determine optimum waste management solutions.
