After working for ten years as a clinical psychologist in the UKNational Health Service, in 1979 Nick Heather developed andled the Addictive Behaviours Research Group at the University ofDundee. In 1987 he became founding Director of the National Drugand Alcohol Research Centre at the University of New SouthWales,Australia. He returned to the UK at the beginning of 1994 andis now Emeritus Professor of Alcohol and Other Drug Studies atNorthumbria University. He has published many scientific articles,books, book chapters and other publications, mostly in the area ofaddictions and with an emphasis on the treatment of alcoholproblems.
Tim Stockwell has been Director of the National DrugResearch Institute, Curtin University, Western Australia (formerlythe National Centre for Research into the Prevention of Drug Abuse)since June 1996 and served as Deputy Director for seven years priorto that. He studied Psychology and Philosophy at Oxford University,obtained a PhD at the Institute of Psychiatry, University ofLondon, and is a qualified clinical psychologist. He served asRegional Editor for Australasia of the journal Addiction for6 years and has published over 140 research papers, book chaptersand monographs, plus several books on prevention and treatmentissues. His current interests include alcohol taxation, liquorlicensing legislation and the assessment of alcohol consumption andrelated problems at the community, regional and national levels. Hehas worked as a consultant to the World Health Organization and theUnited Nations Drug Control Program. - Newsletter
